The combined impact of the energy price rises imposed in recent months by the big six providers will add £3.9 billion to household energy bills, a new study has calculated.

Moneysupermarket.com has estimated this figure on the basis of average hikes in price of 17.4 per cent for gas and 10.8 per cent for electricity.

Such increases may put extra strain on those who are already dealing with issues such as trying to pay off credit card debt and leave them needing to seek help.

“Bill payers will be reeling from the recent price hikes,” said utilities manager at the site Scott Byrom, who suggested switching may save some money.

One development that could aid consumers may be the announcement this week by energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne at the Liberal Democrat party conference of extra regulatory powers for Ofgem to help customers.

Director of consumer policy at uswitch.com Anne Robinson called these “hard-hitting and meaningful”.
